چکیده

Sustainability is an ideal state, that cannot be “measured” per se. We can instead try to measure the distance from this ideal state. Regarding the use of resources and the emission of residues in the environment, the problem is “extensive”, i.e. a function of the magnitude of the problem (with respect to the size of the system). Humanity is approaching its “limits to growth” and this problem is getting more and more critical. This implies that in Emergy evaluation an analysis of the traditional indicators, such as transformity, ELR, EIR, EYR, %R or ESI, is not sufficient. Unsustainability is related to the use of resources in the N and F categories, not relative to the total Emergy flow or to the R portion, but by themselves: in electricity production the use of more water (in a renewable manner) does not reduce the unsustainability of a thermal plant using fossil fuels. This means that Emergy evaluation should be more based on the consideration of N and F, also using intensive indicators. F and N are then related to the actual use of resources, while the system is mainly passive with respect to R: rain falls on the system; it is not the system that “extracts” rain from the clouds. This has implications on the relationship between emergy evaluation and the concept of carrying capacity.

Emergy Synthesis and Ecological Footprint: Drawing a Parallel between Methodologies for a Sub-National Case Study

Emergy synthesis (ES) was proposed as a method for integral evaluation of environmental and economic resources to measure the quality of matter, energy and information within systems. The method takes into account every contribution from nature and human economy in order to express the relative importance of each resource. Emergy is considered a scientific measure of real wealth in terms of the...

Emergy analysis of greenhouse cucumber production in Sistan region

In the current century, agriculture sustainability and the reduction of environmental pressure are two main objectives of the management of agro-ecosystems that is challenged by energy inefficiency. In this respect, the present study assessed one of the most important planting systems in Sistan region by emergy analysis approach. It analyzed all inputs of greenhouse cucumber production system i...

Emergy-Based Sustainability of the Peruvian Economy

In this study, emergy evaluation was used to analyze the Peruvian ecological – economic system. The material and energy flows were evaluated in units of solar emergy. The performance of the Peruvian system was assessed through emergy-based indices. The main calculated indicators are the following: (a) Emergy/USD ratio = 1.01 E+13 sej/dollar; (b) Emergy Yield Ratio (EYR) = 9.69; and (c) Environm...

Emergy Evaluation of the Biosphere and Natural Capital

The measure of value called emergy is used to evaluate the flows of energy and resources that sustain the biosphere including the economy of humans. A donor system of value based on solar emergy required to produce things is suggested as the only means of reversing the logic trap inherent in economic valuation, which suggests that value stems only from utilization by humans. The stocks of natur...

Methodological considerations from a wastewater treatment case study in Kenya

Emergy methodology questions were raised during a case study where a Sugar factory effluent were treated in a pond system in the Lake Victoria watershed, and evaluated from a performance, cost and resource use perspective. This paper focus on the methodological questions, which were the following: (1) how should the emergy systems diagram be drawn when dealing with a system that is in the recyc...
